Design and Origins of the CP-60 Diamant

The CP-60 Diamant is a light, multi-purpose aircraft developed in the early 1960s by French engineer Claude Piel. It was based on the successful Piel CP-30 Emeraude, though with a notable design departure. While the Emeraude featured smooth, streamlined forms, the Diamant adopted a more angular configuration.

This design choice, despite its appearance, resulted in an expanded internal space, enabling the aircraft to be truly multi-purpose. The prototype made its maiden flight in 1962, marking the beginning of its versatile career in aviation.

Versatility and Capabilities

The CP-60 Diamant is designed for a wide range of uses. It can be employed as a pleasure and touring aircraft, offering an enjoyable flying experience. Its relatively compact construction provides good maneuverability, which also makes it suitable as a sports aircraft.

Depending on the modification and power plant used, the Piel Diamant’s cabin can accommodate up to 3-4 people, including the pilot. Although initially intended for private use, this capacity expanded its possibilities for passenger transport. Furthermore, the inclusion of dual controls allows it to be operated as a training aircraft.

The aircraft also proves useful for cargo transport, capable of carrying up to 330 kilograms of total weight (including pilot’s weight and depending on the aircraft modification). This multifunctionality makes it a robust option for various needs.

Engine Options

The basic modification of the CP-60 Diamant is equipped with an American Continental four-cylinder piston engine, delivering 90 horsepower. Other modifications feature both American and French engines from various manufacturers, with power outputs ranging from 100 to 180 horsepower.
